WWI Trio and memorabilia pertaining to Edward Scafe (Ted) Scorfield, a noted sportsman, cartoonist for the Sydney Bulletin, and personal friend of Norman Lindsay; 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory impressed to 42142 Cpl E.S.Scorfield RE; Russian Medal of St George, Nicholas II, 2nd Class in gold, reverse impressed N22117; Tynemouth Medal in gold for life saving, reverse engraved "Awarded to E.S.Scorfield 20th Aug 1911" with original fitted case (only four issued in gold, one with bar, Ted was the first winner of the award); together with tatty mount for the first four medals; London Gazette extracts confirming the Russian award; limited military records; a copy of the citation for the life saving award; and the following memorabilia:. leather bound album "From Rugby Football & Other Sporting Friends 1925 Teddy Scorfield" containing numerous autographs from rugby union football players largely from 1925-1935 incl the 1930 English team, other personages up until 1960 incl some NSW rugby union players, personal newspaper clippings, and a GOC 10th (Irish) Division commendation certificate for the Gallipoli operation dated 4th Sept 1915. The album was presumably gifted to Ted upon his departure to Australia after the Great War. two limited edition art books; "Painting in Oil" by Norman Lindsay, Shepherd Press Sydney, hard bound with 14 colour inlaid plates and 16 half tone plates in B/W, no.196 of 1,000 copies signed by the author in facsimile and pen with additional inscription by Howard Hinton 1945, some foxing and damage to cover corners; "Norman Lindsay Water Colour Book" Springwood Press Sydney 1939, hard bound with 18 inlaid colour prints, one of 1,820 copies offered for sale, handwritten inscription and signature by Norman Lindsay, and personal handwritten letter from Lindsay to Scorfield taped-in, very good condition. "A Mixed Grill by Ted Scorfield of the Bulletin" soft cover 68pp with numerous cartoons from over the years, tape reinforced binding. a fine selection of 19 original cartoon drawings as presented to Scorfield by fellow cartoonists upon his retirement from the Sydney Bulletin in 1961; together with three of his own works and a more serious sketch possibly based on the Simpson and his donkey legend. a few brochures and newspaper articles relating to Lindsay and Scorfield, incl a Scorfield cartoon letter card. two certificates in the name of Ted's wife marking her volunteer work with the American Red Cross and The American Center c.WWII periodAn exceptional lot with items of interest to a range of collectors. Viewing will rewardTed Scorfield was born in Shields England and showed served with the Royal Engineers, earning a commendation in 1915 and the Russian award for service in Salonica. He was invalided from the latter front towards the end of the war. He had already shown exceptional artistic talent as a young boy (as well as sporting ability - at one point he represented England at rugby union) and he worked as a cartoonist for the Newcastle Sunday Sun and North Mail prior to moving to Australia after being hand picked by the Sydney Bulletin in 1923.
