Придется эту медаль купить.

 

Надо углублятся в списки архива, но англичане их составлявшие - такие не аккуратные! Некоторые строки не разобрать ...

с этой медалью я не совсем понял:

 

Sepoy Pal Singh. 28th Pjbs.

 

В некоторых данных упоменается что это подразделение было сформировано в 1972 году.

28 Пунджабский полк вел свою историю с 1857 г.

В 1922 г. при реформировании Индийской армии 28 П.п. был влит в 15 Пунджабский полк, в качестве 4-го батальона.

Покопался в своих записях.

 

18th Battary R.F.A. командовал майор W.G.H. Manley

 

Всего медаль с планкой NWF 1908, в батарее получили:

Офицеры - 5

Нижние чины - 162

 

А вот и фрагмент листа с J. MURPHY, номер частично утрачен, но нет сомнения, что это именно он.

Что касается 40th Pathans, то этот полк участвовал и в Африканских компаниях, в частности в Сомали 1908-10, так что медали из этого полка вполне могут быть в паре с Africa General Service Medal (EdVII) Somaliland 1908-10.

Robert Walker was born in London on 02/08/1884. Both the regular (i.e. 1st and 2nd) battalions of The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) [W. York. R.] utilised the same regimental numbering sequence, and the '6675' assigned to Walker indicates he enlisted into the regiment as a regular soldier during 1903. Initially undertaking basic training at the regimental depôt in York. It's likely he was subsequently posted directly from the depôt to the 1st Battalion in India, where they had been stationed continuously since 1899, and where they would remain till 1911. 

 

Now, at this period, the usual period of service for a soldier joining the 'Regular Army' was 12 years, which was known as a 'Short Service' enlistment, entailing both 'Colour' service, i.e. full time service with his unit, and paid reserve service in the 'Army Reserve'; here, although released back into civilian life, a man would be liable for recall (in most cases only as a result of a general mobilisation). For the infantry, the usual balance was 7 years' 'Colour' service, and 5 years in the reserve. Given Walker's enlistment date, and the fact he does not appear on the 1911 Census (which also covered British military units in India), it is likely that he had not elected to serve the full 12 years with the 'Colours', but had indeed returned to the United Kingdom in 1910, and transferred to the Army Reserve in 1910. There also no sign of him serving with the 2nd Bn W. York. R., who were stationed at Colchester, in the United Kingdom, during 1911. Unfortunately, I have not been able to positively identify Walker or his address in the United Kingdom from the 1911 Census, nor from electoral rolls during the period before the Great War

 

From the Great War medal rolls for the 1st Bn, W. York. R., it is clear that Walker, being a reservist in 1914, was recalled to the 'Colours' upon mobilisation in August, 1914, as units rapidly expanded to meet war strength. The Battalion, a unit of 18th Infantry Brigade in 6th Division, III Corps, landed at St Nazaire, in France, on 10/09/1914. The Battalion saw its first, and most costly, taste of combat at the actions on the Aisne Heights on 20/09/1914. During the engagement, and under the ruse of a flag of truce, the Germans outflanked the Battalion on its right. Eight officers and 436 'Other Ranks' were captured, including 6675 Private Robert Walker, 'A' Company. In captivity, Walker was held at Müncheberg Camp in Brandenburg, then at Döberitz, also in Brandenburg, from April 1917.

 

Upon release and return to the United Kingdon, Walker was finally demobilised, and transferred to the 'Class 'Z' Reserve' on 09/04/1919. With the abolition of the 'Class 'Z' Reserve' on 31/03/1920, it would seem Robert Walker finally completed his military service obligation. He was awarded the 1914 Star ('clasps & roses'), plus the usual British War Medal and Victory Medal.

 

I have been unable, so far, to trace Walker after the Great War. His Prisoner of War records do show that he was married, and lived in East Finchley, County of Middlesex (now part of Greater London).

 

What is of interest is the fact that when awarded the 'Indian General Service Medal' with clasp 'North West Frontier 1908', Walker held the rank of Corporal. However, by the time he was recalled to the 'Colours' in 1914, he had reverted to the rank of Private. Given that a reservist would be mobilised in the rank in which they had left 'Colour' service, this implies that at some point in his final year of 'Colour' service, Walker either resigned his rank (according to regulations, only with permission of the Commanding Officer of the Battalion), or was removed from the roll of battalion N.C.O.s by order of the Commanding Officer of the Battalion.
