The Emergency Bouzouki Player
Genesis

On the South Western coast of Crete lies the harbour village of Sfakia, the southernmost point of European civilisation. To the south, the Mediterranean stretches down to the Egyptian coast and to the north, the towering foothills of the Samaria gorge loom imperiously over the few hundred stone houses they have shielded from the elements for the past thousand years. Sometime in the Nineteenth Century, as Greece battled for her freedom from 400 years of barbaric Islamic tyranny under the occupation of the Ottomans, my great-great grandfather Andreas Broulidakis was born in Sfakia. Andrea as the name is correctly spoken, with the `s' being silent, was a ship's captain and would certainly have given his heart and mind to the war for freedom from Muslim oppression.
Great-great grandfather Andreas' first son was born in Sfakia in 1836 and he named him Manoussos after his father in the Greek tradition of naming sons after their paternal grandfathers. Manoussos followed in the family business of piloting ships around the Mediterranean and sometime around 1870 his first-born son, my grandfather, was born in Sfakia and was named Andreas. Andreas Broulidakis continued the family tradition by becoming a ship's captain and on one of his sailing adventures to St. Petersburg, Andreas met a beautiful young Russian, Katerina, and brought her back to Sfakia where they were married in the thousand year-old stone walled church in a traditional Orthodox ceremony.

By the turn of the century Egypt was booming under Greek management and Andreas relocated there, first in Alexandria and then in Suez where my father, Manoussos Broulidakis, was born in 1916, the youngest of five children and the first-born son.

During 1936, when he was barely 20 years old, Manoussos, a tall and handsome young man fluent in seven languages, moved to South Africa where he soon found success in the construction business. When World War Two broke out, he volunteered to fight in the war against Nazi fascism, serving in the Allied Army in North Africa and later in Italy. In a slightly ironic symmetry with the family origins, he rose to the rank of Captain.

After the defeat of the Nazi's, he returned to South Africa and the construction business, building high rises in Johannesburg, a booming city fast becoming a popular destination for Europeans seeking opportunity away from the post-war privations.
